Contemporary Art Biennale in the HSE Courtyard
From September 24 to October 15, the HSE Faculty of Media Communications and School of Cultural Studies will host the Media Yard art project in their courtyard; the project is part of the 5th Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art.
The Media Yard, conceived as a 'total outdoor installation', is the brainchild of artist Marina Zvyagintseva. Its purpose is to bring contemporary art out of museums and galleries and into outdoor city spaces and to show how it can be used to transform them. In a typical Central Moscow courtyard, 20 contemporary artists have installed a variety of art objects, including Monument to a Transistor by Daria Krotova, Telemost by Sergei Chernov, a metal sculpture by Igor Shelkovsky, Information Portal made of newspapers by Marina Zvyagintseva, and other installations. The artists have used every surface and texture, including asphalt, a ventilation shaft, benches, construction netting, trees, and flower beds. Most art objects will be interactive. The authors' idea is to create a space for communication around each installation.
According to the organizers, the Media Yard’s style and images are associated with the content of studies at the Faculty of Media Communications. The use of old VHS tapes, radios, newspapers, and other items in the installations helps visualize information technology and the media space.
As part of the project, HSE students and artists will lead daily tours of the Media Yard through October 15.
