'When You Come Here, You Learn to Disassociate Politics from Culture and People'

On August 15, the second HSE Summer University drew to a close. The number of participants in this year's programmer nearly tripled with 103 students coming from 15 countries. This included both independent students as well at five organized groups from Seoul National University, Seoul National University of Science and Technology, Miami University, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), and Guangdong University of Foreign Studies.

The Internet Needs Freedom but There Have to Be Limits

How can we combine protecting personal data with the freedom of  information? Why have a tax for internet users? How far can states go in internet regulation? These and other questions were discussed at the 4th International Summer School on Cyber Law at HSE.

Last week, the Summer School on Russian-Chinese Business: Cultural and Legal Aspects came to an end. The School saw the participation of students from HSE Nizhny Novgorod and from the Southwest University of Political Science and Law (SWUPL) in Chongqing, China. From July 4 to 25, the HSE Summer University welcomed thirty Korean students from the Seoul National University who had come to study Russian and learn more about modern life in Russia as part of SNU’s programme in Moscow.

'HSE Is the Best Place for Work on Issues in International Relations'

HSE has held the 5th International Relations Russia-China Summer School 'Eurasia 2020: Prospects for cooperation.' The school has been held since 2011 by the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs jointly with the East China Normal University (Shanghai, China). This year it was held with support from the Alexander Gorchakov Public Diplomacy Fund. This is the only summer school of this kind held in Russia.

Lilia Ovcharova Presents Achievements of UN Millennium Development Goals

Lilia Ovcharova, the Director of the Institute for Social Development Studies, presented a special report at the UN House in Moscow on the achievements of the UN Millennium Development Goals. Under the auspices of the United Nations, the leaders of 174 nations signed the document at the start of the 21st century, thereby setting important goals for the entire world. This year, experts presented the results of the project at UN headquarters in New York City and around the world.

The fourth annual conference of the HSE International Centre for the Study of Institutions and Development recently concluded. Leading researchers from Russia and abroad discussed the effect that institutions, elites and collective action all have on the economies of countries, especially developing economies.

HSE St Petersburg has hosted a seminar entitled “Creative spaces: dream or dream solution?”, with the participation of Melanie Post van Ophem, former chair of the Rotterdam Council for Arts and Culture, and Hans Karel Wesseling, Consul General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in St Petersburg.

The Book Market, Finance and Reasons for Self-Medication: What People are Studying at the Summer School on Institutional Analysis

In the Moscow Region, the ninth Russian Summer School on Institutional Analysis (RSSIA) was held recently, bringing together 26 young researchers from Italy, Montenegro, the Philippines, Macedonia, Great Britain, Japan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and Russia. During the programme, they addressed problems concerning the economics of education, financial institutions, the public sector, and the theory of industrial markets.

A Gathering of Historians

Zelenogorsk hosted an international conference on the history of diverse societies, as well as on the history of nationalism. The conference, which was called ‘Ruptures and Continuities in Histories of Empire: Federalism, Regionalism, and Autonomies as Alternative Political Imaginaries of Post-Imperial Political Order’, was organized by the Department of History at HSE - St. Petersburg and drew leading experts in the field of ‘new imperial history’.
